I've been looking for an alternative to the ubiquitous Lonely Planet and found this freshly released guidebook in a hostel on one of my travels through China. It boasts beautiful full color photos throughout the entire book of over 1350 pages, densely packed with info on every region in China - unfortunately with some major flaws which I mention below.
What I like
+ Densely packed, tons of info.
+ Very good structure. Everything seems neatly organized and well thought out (except for the weird positioning of the table of contents, see below).
+ Nice sidenotes and stories throughout the book. Reading the book feels very rewarding (not at all for political issues, though, see below).
+ Personal writing style. E.g. in the scam-section there are some personal accounts of how the writers were actually scammed. It gives the warnings a lot of credibility and feels way more authentic than how scam warnings usually are presented. For me the personal accounts helped to make the book feel honest.
+ Very good info on the country's history (except for any controversial topics!) and culture but also on off-topics like biodiversity, current affairs like air pollution and even how to use chopsticks and squat toilets!
+ Discounts at many bars and hostels/hotels for book owners.
+ Recently released (July 2014), China is changing rapidly, I guess it's handy to have a fresh guidebook.
What I didn't like
- MAJOR LETDOWN This book avoids many very important issues of Chinas history! Need proof? There is hardly any info on Chairman Mao - not his achievements and especially not his crimes. Tian'anmen Square is presented as a tourist attraction and absolutely nothing is written about the revolts which ignited here and were brutally suppressed by the Chinese government. In my opinion this strongly reduces the credibility of the entire book. Other books (like Lonely Planet) are much more daring and represent the current state of discussion better.
- For many places (e.g. Beijing and Yangshuo) I didn't really find a hostel I liked in the book.
- The table of contents is hidden on page 32. This gets really annoying. Should be moved to the beginning of the book to find places quicker.
- The Hostel recommendation for Guilin "Monkey Jane's Guesthouse" is actually not in Guilin but located in the nearby region Yangshuo! Fortunately I found out before visiting - could have caused major inconvenience!
- The introduction and the back of the book mentions four pull-out maps which come for free along with the book. I haven't received these when I bought the book in a hostel. Maybe one has to order these maps separately, but couldn't find any info on it in the book.
I would not buy this book again, because it doesn't reflect the political struggles which are an essential part of China today. If political issues are not important for you, then this is a decent guidebook, however I was not very happy with the Hostel/Hotel recommendations which is another major letdown.
